Carlisle police responded to a report of an auto theft at approx 0630 in the 600 block of Franklin St. The victim had left his car running in the parking lot of the Carlisle food mart when he went inside. The defendant, James Haines, proceeded to take the vehicle. As he was leaving the parking lot, Haines struck another car that was pulling into the store. Haines fled the area in the white Toyota Tacoma. A BOLO was put out over the county radio and was spotted by officers on Rt 581. A pursuit then ensued and the pursuit went into Dauphin county. Multiple agencies from Cumberland and Dauphin county as well as PSP assisted. The Tacoma ended up crashing and the driver fled on foot and was ultimately apprehended by responding officers. Haines is currently in Cumberland county prison awaiting arraignment on charges of Felony auto theft, Fleeing and eluding, DUI and and multiple traffic violations.
