On January 19, 2019, at 3:00am, the East Pennsboro Township Police conducted a traffic stop at Sunoco, in the 600 block of North Enola Road after observing a center turn lane violation. The driver was identified as Michael Eugene Shipe, 42, of the 1700 block of State Street, Harrisburg. Shipe did not have a valid PA driver's license and was also wanted out of York County for fleeing and eluding. Another officer arrived to assist in arresting Shipe on the outstanding warrant. While taking Shipe into custody, he jumped back into the driver's seat and attempted to drive off. The officers tried to get the vehicle back into park and remove the driver from the vehicle when Shipe accelerated, dragging the officers approximately 50 feet through the parking lot and onto North Enola Road. The suspect continued fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed. Both officers were injured in the incident with non-life threatening injuries. Shipe was pursued by officers of the West Shore Regional Police Department, Hampden Township Police Department, Mechanicsburg Borough Police Department, and the Pennsylvania State Police. The pursuit lasted approximately ten (10) miles and at points exceeded speeds of 120 miles per hour. Shipe was apprehended in the City of Harrisburg in the area of 13th Street and Berryhill Street without further incident. Shipe was taken into custody and charged with Aggravated assault, Resisting arrest, Fleeing and eluding, Driving while operating privilege is suspended, Escape, and Recklessly endangering another person.
