Did you know that there is a state law and a township ordinance that states that it is the duty of every police officer to seize and detain any dog which is found running at large? It also states that the owner or claimant of any dog shall pay a penalty of $50 to the political subdivision whose officers made the seizure prior to releasing the dog. This fee can increase depending on the number of days the dog is in the care and custody of the police department. This law was established to help offset some of the costs incurred by the municipalities to include the food, housing, and the fees associated with relinquishing the dogs to an animal shelter.
As we have had an increase in dogs running at large, we wanted to make sure we remind our residents of the law as it will be strictly enforced. Please make sure you share this information with all of the other local dog owners you know!
