On September 7, 2022 at 4:31 PM, the Lower Allen Township Police Department was dispatched to a call for "shots fired" at the Highland Park Playground, 1301 Chatham Road. The initial caller reported hearing a loud bang and then approximately twelve people fled the area. Officers arrived and located "two victims." They explained that they were at the park when two other vehicles pulled up. The males from those vehicles began fighting with the two victims. It was during this fight, that everyone heard a loud bang and then ran away from the park.
An involved witness was located by officers. They stated that the two victims and a third male were already at the park. After words were exchanged between the males, punches were thrown. The third male and an 18 year male began fighting. When the 18 year old and his entourage began following the third male, that male pulled out a handgun and fired a shot.
Police were then able to contact the 18 year old male and spoke with him about the incident. He explained that he had been receiving messages from one of the other males. The two had began fighting during an incident Saturday night and now wanted to finish it. He asked the 18 year old to come to the playground to meet him. The two began fighting at the park and the 18 year old ran away after being shot at. When he later examined his pants, he found a bullet hole in the leg. He was not injured during the incident.
Officers were able to search the nearby area and found a 9 MM handgun discarded in a dumpster of a neighboring apartment complex. The serial number of the firearm was checked and it was found to have been stolen from New Cumberland Borough.
The male discovered as the shooter, was 16 years of age. He was quickly arrested at his residence and was charged as an adult with: attempted aggravated assault with a weapon, receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm as a minor, and reckless endangering. His bail was set at $15,000.
