The Carlisle Police Department is warning residents to be on the lookout for the resurgence of a commonly used scam. We have been receiving an increased number of complaints in reference to the classic Foreign Lottery Scam. This scam is conducted through the mail. An unkowing victim will receive a letter stating that they have won some outlandish amount of money in a foreign lottery that they never entered. The letter is accompanied by a check that is to be deposited into an account and then sent back in a cashiers check to cover "processing fees". The check is a fake and will eventually get returned by the victim's bank, but by then it is too late. The cashier's check has been sent and the victim is out thosands of dollars. If you have any concern about a check you received, ask the employees at your bank for assistance in determining it's authenticity.
Police remind readers of the old adage, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is". Please pass this information to all the people in your family, especially elderly parents and grandparents. The elderly are typically the target of these types of scams.
