Officer Willis John Cole- A Fallen Hero
Today we remember that on August 19th, 1994, the New Cumberland Police Department tragically lost one of its finest officers, Officer Willis John Cole, in the line of duty. He was 30 years old.
Officer Willis Cole was a dedicated public servant with 10 years of service to the community. Known for his positive qualities such as bravery, compassion, and sense of humor. Officer Cole was deeply respected by both colleagues and citizens alike.
On August 19th, 1994, Officer Willis Cole was shot and killed after responding to a robbery in progress at a coin shop in the 200 block of Fourth Street.
Officer Willis Cole arrived at the scene and was apprehending one of the suspects when another came around the building and opened fire on him. Officer Cole was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both suspects fled but were captured within 45 minutes of the shooting. Both men were convicted, with one sentenced to life in prison and the other given a death sentence.
Officer Cole made the ultimate sacrifice while performing his duties for the Borough of New Cumberland. His loss is still deeply felt by his family, New Cumberland Police Department, and the community.
Officer Cole will always be remembered as a hero who gave his life in service to others. The New Cumberland Police Department will never forget his courage and dedication.
