We are pleased to partner with the West Shore School District in a new way to further protect our students on their way to and from school. The school district has partnered with BusPatrol to launch a new School Bus Safety Program in line with PA Motor Vehicle Code § 3345.
All school buses that transport District students will be outfitted with safety technology to make the ride to and from school safer for all. This technology includes photo enforcement cameras to detect vehicles that illegally pass stopped school buses while the stop sign is deployed and red lights are flashing. Every incident is reviewed by a law enforcement officer before a violation notice is issued to the registered owner. Starting October 20th the safety program will go into effect, and vehicles which illegally pass a stopped school bus could receive a fine in the amount of $300. Registered owners will receive a "Notice of violation" which is a legitimate civil penalty from Bus Patrol. These notices will look similar to the sample one provided.
The safety of our students is a top priority. During Pennsylvania’s Operation Safe Stop, state authorities reported almost 200 violations in just one school day in 2023, equivalent to 31,500 violations in a 180-day school year. West Shore is no exception. This safety initiative will attempt to curb dangerous driving behavior around school buses to protect our students.
We encourage all residents and commuters to familiarize themselves with school bus-stopping laws, and we encourage parents and guardians to remind their children to practice safety tips when boarding and disembarking school buses. It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights, and one must stop at least ten feet before reaching the school bus when the red signal lights on the school bus are flashing and the side stop signal arms are activated. Obeying this important traffic safety law is critical in protecting the well-being of the students.
Attached is a spread sheet provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation which provides information and answers frequently asked questions about such cameras.
