September 16, 2022 - Commonwealth v. John Patrick Mumper: Cumberland County Judge Jessica Brewbaker today sentenced John Patrick Mumper, of Carlisle, to serve a minimum of one year (less one day) to a maximum of two years (less one day) in the Cumberland County Prison following his guilty plea in July to charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless Driving. Judge Brewbaker also sentenced Mumper to an additional 18 months of probation to be served after the expiration of his prison sentence.
On August 28, 2020, Mumper was operating his car on N. Hanover Street in Carlisle Borough at 20 mph over the posted speed limit when he disregarded a steady yellow signal and entered the intersection of N. Hanover Street and Noble Blvd, crashing into an oncoming vehicle and killing the passenger, Gabriel “Gabby” Godfrey. Ms. Godfey was 23 years old at the time of her death and served as a Flight Paramedic in the United States Air Force.
Gabby’s family attended the sentencing hearing and both Gabby’s mother, Marta Godfrey, and Gabby’s fiancé, Bobbi Nguyen, addressed the court regarding the terrible impact of this incident on their lives. Judge Brewbaker, after hearing their emotional testimony at today’s sentencing, sentenced Mumper to additional condition that requires him to write a letter to the court on the anniversary of Gabby’s death each year for the duration of his sentence.
After today’s sentencing, Cumberland County District Attorney Seán M. McCormack commented, “Everyday people risk a similar tragic outcome whenever they try to ‘beat the light’ and rush recklessly through an intersection. In Gabby’s memory, I hope people hearing about this case think twice before making that decision in the future.”
McCormack also complimented Senior Deputy District Attorney Glenn A. Parno, and Carlisle Police officers Sergeant Jeffrey Kurtz and Officer Michael Sturm for all their hard work during this investigation and prosecution.
