We are aware of the video that has been shared of two of our officers who made contact with a business owner seeking cooperation in following the Governor’s Order. This investigative visit was prompted by complaints from the public and not initiated by this police department. Our guidance at the time of the visit was just that, a verbal warning, followed by written warning, which would then be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for their final disposition via a hearing.
If you feel the Order of the Governor is unconstitutional, by all means you are welcome to express your freedom of speech; however, our officers and department fall directly under the guidance and direction of the DA’s office. As in all other situations when we receive a complaint, we will respond accordingly. As of May 11, 2020, at 2:18 pm, the District Attorney’s Office has provided updated guidelines to the area police departments. You can reference the attached Press Release Statement issued by the Cumberland County District Attorney.
