The Shippensburg Police Department is warning residents of a recent scam targeting individuals in our community. Scammers are sending fraudulent emails and letters claiming to be from the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles (PennDOT) or the DMV stating that the recipient has an outstanding traffic violation or unpaid fine.
These scams often use official-sounding language and may even include fake logos or letterheads to appear legitimate. However, they are phishing attempts designed to trick victims into revealing sensitive personal information or making payments to the scammers. They will try to give you a code and a deadline date.
If you receive a notification claiming to be from PennDOT, please be cautious and take the following steps:
Remember, legitimate government agencies will never demand immediate payment or threaten to revoke your license or registration without proper notification and due process.
Stay safe, and stay informed. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the Shippensburg Police Department at 717.532.7361.
Together, we can prevent fraud and protect our community.
